The compact cassette tape was groundbreaking as it allowed individuals to record audio tracks themselves. Before its invention, reel-to-reel audio technology was difficult to operate and required training, primarily making it accessible to radio professionals. The introduction of the cassette tape was therefore revolutionary as it made audio recording and music sharing available to a wider population. The compact cassette consists of two small spools inside a plastic casing, where a magnetic tape allows for audio recording. Building on the popularity of the portable transistor radio, Sony Corp. released the Sony Walkman TPS-L2 in 1979.
