In the 1930s, the company RCA Victor (now RCA Records) launched the first commercially available vinyl long-playing record (LP). Instead of 78 rpm, the playback speed for this modern record was 33⅓ rpm - and the diameter of the record was 12 inches. This made it possible to extend the playing time of the records. In 1948, RCA also released a smaller record at 7 inches, which played a single song on each side at 45 rpm, called "extended play" (EP).
